I remember a conversation I had with a police detective he is about 35 years. He spoke of what a mother had told him by phone about their adolescent child. "Once that is out of the house, not our problem." The policeman, who was a community of high-level suburban explained to me that parents can be irresponsible and in his mind almost criminal in its negligence.
Parents are the most important in the life of a child. They set the tone for everything. If drug abuse parents, children may abuse drugs. If husbands beat their wives, their children probably wife beaters too. If parents divorce and abandon their children, these children can not become model parents either. Parents are the front line in preventing of drug abuse and there is much they can do to try to ensure the best possible future for their children.
The problem is that parents want schools to do everything. Teachers become their parents, because "once you're outside the house Not our problem. " What happens at home is more important than what happens in the classroom. Parents can set an example to be informed. It begins with understanding the dangers of prescription drugs. What's in your medicine cabinet? Do you know which medicines are in the house and how much medication you have? Are expired drugs?
Take inventory and track what is in the house.
If a drug is depleted too quickly, which is a sign that someone might abuse the drug. Talk to your children and make this a family project.
Especially teenagers experiment with drugs. They hear about the experiences of his friends. They want to be cool and part of the crowd. If experience with drugs at home, what will happen? If you have a pain medication, what will? If you have any stimulant, what will? What are the risk of overdose? Ask yourself what are the dangers to your child?
Take control. Being a parent, an adult. Have an open conversation with their children about drugs, especially drugs at home. Stay on top of it and know the inventory. Liaise with principals and teachers schools, with your family doctor and pharmacists with local law enforcement.
Be warned. Knowing what to his home in community and the potential impact to be negative in your family. Prevention of drug abuse starts at home with responsible parents. Having this discussion with the family and have a plan on how medication management at home will be an effective preventive measure.
